Twas A Few Days Before Christmas When

My sisters threw such a fun baby shower for me over Christmas break and I had to show you guys some pictures of what they put together because I mean really, they know how to partay. We had a hot chocolate bar complete with donut holes, banana bread and peppermint chocolate covered marshmallows to dip in our drinks and of course what's a party without some cupcakes (my aunt owns the bakery The Mermaid Bakery in downtown Denver and made us some peanut butter and salted caramel cupcakes and they were TO DIE FOR. If you're in the area you have to go try her goodies, she's kind of a wizard). I definitely felt the love...and the sugar rush. Thanks for such a fun party sistas!!

It's A.....

And I am just ecstatic, mostly because I was pretty convinced that it was a boy and hello, I APPARENTLY HAVE NO MATERNAL INSTINCT!!! Browsing through all of the teensy tiny girl dresses and guys, I die. I die of cuteness every time.

The Fam is all headed over to Colorado for Christmas and my sisters decided to throw me a baby shower while I was down there. In true cheapskate fashion (I like to call it DIY because hello, sounds so much trendier and hip)  I decided to make my own invitations. They were so fun to paint and I'm planning on using the artwork in the nursery somehow to give it a personal touch. Perhaps when we come up with a name I'll paint her name in the center of the wreath?!

Also. Name my unborn child. No seriously. Sir Matt and I are having no success. Every name I love he hates and every name he loves I loathe. It's really kind of the worst. At this point I'm hoping that once he sees all of the misery I have to go through during birth he'll just let me name her whatever the heck I want.

Or ya know you could just solve the dilemma and help us. Oh pretty please won't you???

DIY Bear Rug Baby Blanket

Nesting has you guys. All I can think about is what needs to be done to the nursery, and what we need to have before the baby comes. Basically if I'm not at work/sleeping I'm coming up with some kind of project for the bebe. This is one of my favorites so far, I've always wanted to have a baby blanket that was made by me for each of our kids and so I suppose this is the beginning of a new tradition! Here's how you can make your own.

2 yards of microfleece
black felt
white thread
black thread
sewing machine
something to mark with
^^ 1. Double up your two yards of fabric and on the wrong sides of the fabric mark out the shape of your bear rug. Then cut the bear shape out of both layers of fabric.
^^2. Separate the two layers of fabric, we'll now be working on the top layer. Use trim/felt/anything you have around the house and cut out pieces to make the bear face and then pin them to the right side of the top layer and stitch them down with your sewing machine.
I used a combination of felt, trim and hand embroidery.
^^Next, still using the top layer only use a very tightly woven zig zag stitch on your machine to embroider the paws.
^^3. Once all of the embroidery is done on the top layer, take both layers, top and bottom and place them right sides together. Sew the two pieces together using your sewing machine but leave a small hand sized hole so that you can flip the blanket right sides out. Once you flip the blanket right sides out use a ladder stitch (video here) to sew the blanket closed. You're done!

Thanksgiving in Portland

Matt and I meandered over to Portland for Thanksgiving, it was a much needed break from all of the everyday stresses of life, this might sound a bit weird but one of my favorite things about the trip was just getting to chat about nothing with Matt at the end of the night. Isn't it so funny the things that we let go of when we're so busy. But just being with each other and having each others attention was kind of amazing. Okay okay so there was lots of other amazing stuff. I decided to make a list of a few of my favorite spots in Oregon in case any of you find yourself there:) Hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving!

Nong's Khao Man Gai (Japanese)
Salt and Straw (ice cream)
Marrakesh (Morrocan)
VooDoo Doughnuts (self explanatory....)
Boke Bowl (Korean, go for their steam buns, I didn't actually love the soup)
Japanese Gardens
Rose Gardens
Multnomah Falls
Powell's Books
Canon Beach

A Little Piece of Magic

I don't know where to start, and when I don't know where to start that means I have a lot to say. So I guess the beginning is as good a place as any. When I found out I was pregnant I realized that my mom was coming into town the very next weekend and I just could not wait to tell her. I mean I literally had to avoid all of her calls because I knew that if we started talking I would spill, I was filled to the brim, my cupeth overfloweth...ed. Matt and I went to Target and found this little white and yellow elephant onsie, just seeing how tiny it was and that in a short 7 months I would have a teeny tiny in my arms, it was unfathomable. We were sitting out in the yard and I told my mom I had a belated birthday present for her. The second she opened the wrapping that little onsie flew so high into the sky and the next thing I knew we were both just screaming and hugging and crying. If I could capture that moment, that little white onsie floating against the bright blue sky and my arms wrapped tight around my mom. That moment was magic, just magic. A little piece of magic that I won't quite experience the same ever again.

That tiny little onsie came back to me in the mail today, and I think my mom has psychic powers. I mean I know she has psychic powers. Somehow she knew that I needed that little piece of magic that I felt that day, just a tiny little piece of that day to let me know that everything would be okay.

I'm terrified. And that doesn't take away an ounce of my happiness, or the fact that I know that my greatest calling in life will be to be a mother. But somehow admitting that I'm terrified and stressed and sometimes a bit miserable seems to make people terrified for me.Which I get, but let me just explain.

Matt and I weren't planning this pregnancy. Shocking right. I mean, obviously Heavenly Father knew we weren't going to get our butts in gear and planned it for us. We were thinking sometime around summer of next year, when Matt was done with school and working full time, when I could have good health insurance, when we could have saved up a bit more. When, when, when. And then all of our plans just disappeared and there that big word was. BABY. I was ecstatic, I am ecstatic. But that doesn't change the complete and utter lack of control that I feel, the feeling that whether or not I'm ready this baby will be ready. The fact that big giant scary healthcare bills are coming that we weren't/ still aren't prepared for and they are coming whether we like it or not, the fact that I have zero control over my body which seems to fail me way too much lately.

And I guess I just need to express that, because I think to really feel the happiness you need to let yourself feel vulnerable and scared out of your mind too. I've never felt such a force to give my will to the Lords before, because I know without a doubt that this is the right time and that He knows that I'm ready for this giant responsibility, He knows my fears, He knows my inadequacies and He still knows that I can do this. And that in and of itself is a little bit magical wouldn't you say.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that this whole having a baby thing isn't always roses, but that also doesn't make it any less beautiful.

Oh and Mom, thanks for sending me a little piece of the magic today. If I can give just a little smithereen to my little of what you have given to me, then well I think we'll be just fine.

You guys, I'm over halfway there!! Sweet glory and hallelujah! But don't let the pictures fool you, I have quite the belly going on but this dress is a literal miracle worker (yessss it's a dress and yessss you would be seeing my rumpus if I actually wore it as one) I couldn't say no because it just flowed so nicely over my tummy tum tum. It's hard work finding stuff that works with a growing belly and pretty depressing when it really comes down to it.  I may have died a little inside when I was next to the tweens yelling through the stalls, "I think I need a smaller size" as I was just hoping and praying I could fit into a size large without the seems popping. But such is life when you're growing a human.

I had a very strange moment this week. This lady was walking down the street and I was with the Indian. This lady was walking this tiny little tea cup chihuahua, I mean literally though it's kennel is probably a tea cup. And as we walked past I cooed at the cute little pup and went to pet the 'lil guy when she started yelling at me, "This dog is being trained to be a seeing eye dog!!!! You can't touch him!!!!" I immediately apologized and went on my I gullible...or was she just crazy? I mean really though, I've never heard of tea cup chihuahua seeing eye dogs...'twas a strange day.

Saturday Brunch: German Apple Pancakes

There's this amazing breakfast place in Denver called The Pancake House that serves one amazing German Apple Pancake and for years I just thought, this is it, I'll never attempt to make this in my life, it just doesn't get better than this. But guys, after a little experimenting with this recipe I think I've come up with a close second. Behold, the German Apple Pancake that will change your Saturday brunch FOREVER.

4 eggs
1/2 cup of flour
1/2 tsp of baking powder
1 tablespoon of sugar
1/2 tsp of salt
1 cup of milk
1 tsp of vanilla
2 tablespoons of butter
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup white sugar divided
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 large apple very thinly sliced
  1. In a large bowl, blend eggs, flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Gradually mix in milk, stirring constantly. Add vanilla, melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Let batter stand for 30 minutes or overnight.
  2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  3. On the stove top, melt butter in a 10 inch skillet, brushing butter up on the sides of the pan. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Sprinkle mixture over the butter and saute in the pan. Add apple slices to the skillet and stir. Sprinkle remaining sugar over apples. Place skillet over medium-high heat until the mixture bubbles, then using a pie tin, pour the apple mixture into the pie tin and gently pour the batter mixture over the apples.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and bake for 10 minutes. Slide pancake onto serving platter and cut into wedges.

Of Tossing Your Cookies and Such

jacket: c/o Sheinside (buy it here)     hat: h&m      top: h&m maternity      leggings: Jolt     rain boots: Itasca

There is a cruel harsh fact of life, and that is, that when you are looking your very worst you will see EVERYONE that you know if you step into the outside world. Case in point, a few months back I was pretty much bed ridden with nausea. I was constantly either losing everything I ate or just dry heaving like a fool thinking that I was going to lose everything I ate. It just really was not a good idea to be in the outside world then. But alas my dad was in town and I wanted to spend time with my family so out into the world I went, and I even got ready, and like curled my hair and stuff. It was a miracle!!! The fam decided to go out to eat and I was like, I'm out, I'm looking cute, I can totally eat without tossing my cookies!!! And so we ate our hearts out at the most delicious barbecue place in town. Well people, I tell you what, I didn't even make it out the front doors. I just sprinted to the bathroom and projectile style lost my goods. I tell you what though, when you have to go lose said goods the last thing you worry about is hmmm did I lock the door behind me?? Well I'll answer the question for you, no, indeed I had not locked the door to the single bathroom in the tiny hole in the wall place that opens straight up to everyone sitting and eating their food. The next thing I know I'm hurling uncontrollably and a guy is just standing there with the door open saying oh my gosh I'm so sorry I didn't know anyone was in here, the door wasn't locked!! And so I stopped to discuss with him why I hadn't locked it....NOT!! I just kept hurling my guts out until he closed the stupid door.

So yes it was not my best moment, but at least the guy didn't know me right?! I went out to the car where the whole family was waiting and they wanted to stop at the mall to see if they could find some doo-hickey-ma-thingy that they'd been looking for and I thought maybe the walking would help...because I'm an idiot! And so in the mall we wandered, and it was about three steps in that mall when I knew I needed to puke immediately. And basically I just started sprinting, found myself a bathroom and, you know the rest, wash rinse and repeat or so it goes. At this time I must describe to you the state of what I looked like, it's necessary, really. My makeup had completely melted off of my face, literally my mascara and eyeliner were just sliding down my cheeks and all I could find was an itchy bathroom paper towel to try and clean up the mess, which of course did nothing but smear that black crap around and irritate my face. My bangs and hair were slicked wet to my forhead and side of my face because, what I sweat when I puke okay!! I mean to paint a picture here, my hair looked unto an 80 year old man comb over. I had little dibbles of lunch on my shirt, once again tried to wipe that away unsuccessfully with scratchy bathroom paper towel, and my skin was a pale green. It just was not my day. And I thought to myself, you know what, I feel like crap, and today I'm just not going to fight it. I'm going to look like crap if I feel like it dangit!!! And so I stumbled out of that bathroom where my dad was waiting for me and we just tried to get to the car as quick as possible.

And that's when I heard, "Do you by chance have a blog called Wearing It On My Sleeves??" over my shoulder. It took every fiber of my being to turn around and manage a smile. I mean usually I am ecstatic when I get to meet all of you awesome people that read my blog. But again, 80 year old man comb over, black crap on face and leftover lunch on shirt...yeah. This girl that I met was ADORABLE, STINKING ADORABLE!! If you're reading this, YOU ARE STINKING ADORABLE. And I looked like the day had just swallowed me up, chewed on me for about an hour and then spit me out REAL GOOD. We didn't talk for long, but she was the sweetest and really cheered me up when I felt absolutely crumby. And so we departed and I went on to find another bathroom....

And that's when I realized the universe has just the strangest sense of humor. Also, that was the last day I even tried to pretend being a normal human being when I had morning sickness. The end.

A Word To The Wise

dress: Forever 21            jacket: Sheinside         shoes: Forever 21      purse: Zara

I realized the other day that there are things that you just can't say when you're pregnant. For example,  my coworker was heading out for the night and was going to meet up with some friends and I said Don't do anything that I wouldn't do. And then I realized I was knocked up....

DIY Pumpkin Centerpiece in 10 Minutes

I love spooky Halloween decorations but I love to mix them with goofy fun Halloween decorations as well. This pumpkin centerpiece has certainly brightened up the living room and it only cost $10 and took 10 minutes to make! Here's how to make your own.
For this craft you'll need:
A steak knife
A foam pumpkin (I got mine at Michael's for 40% off)
 1. Using a relatively sharp steak knife cut a hole in the top of your pumpkin.
2. Paint your pumpkin any which way you choose!
3. Arrange your flowers and place them through the top hole in the pumpkin and you're done!

How I Found Out I Was Pregnant In the Place Where Dreams Go To Die

jeans: thrifted      blouse: thrifted       sweater: c/o Sheinside       bag: thrifted       boots: ebay (originally Anthropologie)

I need to give a huge disclaimer before I dive into things here. Here on this very blog, I write about whatever the heck fancies my fancy. It's usually what my mind is consumed with for that day. Well guess what has been consuming my mind for the past 4 months, a baby forming in my belly off of all of my nutrients. Now I know that a lot of blog readers in general feel that bloggers lives and blogs get completely taken over by being pregnant/having a baby. But the way I run things here, and the way that I've managed to keep blogging for so long is to just blog about whatever is going on currently in my life. So basically what I'm saying is get ready for a boat load of baby/baby thoughts/maternity diy's and a crap load of baby nesting crafts and probably more pictures of my giant tummy then any one person should have to ever look at in their life. Just a forewarning in case you need to jump ship (please don't!) but also, consider yourself warned:)

Now can I please tell you the story of how Matt and I found out we were pregnant?

Pretty much I always pictured finding out that I was pregnant as this magical wonderful thing. I would just know because that's what women do. And then I would create some cutsy artsy fartsy craft to surprise Sir Matt and tell him we were pregnant. And then we would gallop in a field for at least an hour and talk all about the wonderful dreams we have for our fetus.

Please every woman in this world get rid of this stupid idea NOW.

Let me paint an ugly little picture for you. I was puking my guts out thinking I'd had a bad case of food poisoning or something and while laying on the bathroom floor I thought to myself Wait could I be pregnant?! No surely it's just the Indian food. I conveniently had a box of pregnancy tests stashed away in the bathroom cabinet and really giggled at myself that I possibly thought that my rotten dinner could be morning sickness, because it was night time and hello, morning sickness is for the morning (LIE LIE LIE).

So there I was, dusting an old pregnancy test off and just sitting there a few minutes later staring at half of a plus sign. I mean it was literally just a CAPITAL T sign, not a + sign. I was like stupid test, hey Matt does this look like a plus sign to you?? To which he promptly agreed that it was a CAPITAL T sign and not a + sign. And so we went to bed. And I lay there thinking, a CAPITAL T sign is really 3/4 of  a plus sign and 1/4 closer to a plus than a minus really if you do the math, I mean if you really think about it. And so it was settled, I would go get another test in the morning to confirm this suspicious CAPITAL T sign.

And thus began my morning trip to the place I loathe most in this world. The Wal-Mart. We've discussed my loathing of The Wal-Mart, and how I will avoid it at all costs. But you guys I was desperate, I mean the sign was 3/4 of a + sign, if that isn't desperation I don't know what is. So I went to pick out a  test and this time opted for the ones that are all digital and fancy and say PREGNANT and NOT PREGNANT, because this time I just wasn't taking any chances. I bought the test and as I was almost out the door I just couldn't handle the suspense. I literally ran into the bathroom, ran past the homeless woman trying to take a shower in the bathroom sink and took the test as fast as humanly possible. The test just sat there flashing until...

And that my friends is the story of how I found out the happiest news in the world, next to a homeless woman bathing in a sink in the place I loathe most in this world. The End....of the very beginning:)

Pregnant Lady In A Gun Store

blouse: thrifted (JCrew)     skirt: c/o Eshatki (buy it here!)     tights: Target     shoes: Thrifted (Restricted)      necklace: thrifted

So yesterday I went to a gun store, to buy a gun. I didn't know if that was obvious or if it needed to be stated but well there you have it. And it was after work so I wandered into the store in a flowery dress and my heels, not looking the most gun savvy and I walk up to the gun counter and say Hi, I'd like to buy this gun. You would have thought I asked him to get an elephant to wear my nieces tutu. His jaw hit.the.floor. So then he proceeds to tell me all of the reasons why I don't want the gun I just picked and why a little lady like me couldn't handle the gun. My response of course was to pick up my petticoat and run home to go churn some butter and get out of a place that was just not suited for a little lady like me.NOT. I told him I wanted to buy it anyway. He asked what for and I said, to shoot things, it seemed like a pretty reasonable explanation to me. Anyways the guy just was not happy with my decision, and by this point five other guys behind the gun counter started to watch me and this man's conversation like we were some dang racing movie. So there they were just staring at me and this man and well then other menfolk shoppers started to stare and really this whole pregnant lady in a dress buying a gun thing became quite the spectacle.

Anyways, a one toothed bearded man whom I will from now on refer to as "crazy 'ol pete" decides to chime in on the conversation to knock some sense into my silly woman mind and tells me listen no offense ma'am but your little frame just can't handle this gun. If you'd like I can take you out to my truck and show you all of my guns though. Well gee whiz crazy 'ol pete, that would be just about the best thing to ever happen to me, to let a man show me a gun out in an abandoned old parking lot, can you also just tie me up and throw me in the back of your truck while you're at it, oh and do you have any candy that you can lure me out to your car with, because I won't go for anything less than a Tootsie Pop, and I only accept from strangers!

You guys. It was like stepping into the 1920's only there was crazy 'ol pete trying to "show me his guns" no no it was probably like the 1920's to. the. T. So anyways, I told them all to shove it....okay okay I told them that if they wouldn't let me buy the gun that I wanted to that I would go somewhere else, so I did. And then I mentally flipped them the bird because a proper woman never loses her temper in public. The end. Now someone get me a Tootsie Pop!

You guys. WOAH!! Things are about to get cray cray over here. And also, that was the biggest longest secret I've ever had to keep and SWEET GLORY, does it feel good to finally tell you guys! Matt and I are beyond thrilled, scared out of our minds, possibly slightly insane but really just beyond ecstatic. A New Handmade Love

dress: made by me    shoes: urban outfitters
The second I spotted this fabric in LA I knew that it was begging to be a well tailored dress with plenty o' volume in the skirt, and I just could not be more thrilled with how it turned out. I vow to wear this as many a fall/spring/winter/summer outfit (oooh she so versatile). Also I plan to never let Matt and Indie touch me in it because this thing is WHITE. I can picture it now, I'll ward messy hands and puppy paws off with the jab of my bleach pen, because me and this dress of mine, we're going places I tell you what :)

Another one for the store some day in the future?!

Thoughts On A Grey Monday

**this picture has absolutely nothing to do with anything. I just kind of like us.
Last night when I got home from work the Indian almost passed out from the excitement of having her mama home, and really an Indie homecoming greeting is just the best thing. She hops up onto the couch so she can be just as tall as you and then starts to stand on her hind legs and simultaneously hop up and down. I mean its delicious really. So me and the Indian had a lovely reunion and then she snuck away to get her lamb chops to of course show me all of the progress she'd made with her beloved squeakers. Well somewhere between lamb chops and the couch she found an ENTIRE HEAD OF GARLIC and ate it in one swift chomp. Where it came best guess is she found it in the depths of the sea...or under the oven, but whatever.  I cannot describe the treachery of her garlicky burps, panting and flatulence. Never have I ever in my life seen such powerful bodily functions.

On a side note I had to walk around with only a right shoe for part of the day. The dog at my sisters apartment ate the left one (like Lilo and Stitch style) and I promised to meet Matt right after so well I jut looked liked a one shoed looney at the store.

Oh and I managed to reach straight up cray cray when I picked up a pan out of the oven with my bare hands. On the fingertip blisters are just no fun. But really who just forgets the oven mits and goes straight for the goods??? I'm pretty sure the Indian and I were destined to be together. Oh and Matt was destined to be with us too:)
